A child's sleep is nothing like yours. Short cycles, wake windows, developing day/night rhythms: understanding it is the first step toward peaceful nights.
Sleep is the very first foundation of development. Before talking, walking, or playing, your child's brain is learning how to sleep—and this learning process takes years, not weeks.
The good news: once you understand how it works, most nighttime difficulties start to make sense. We don't "fix" a child's sleep; we support it as it takes shape.
Newborns sleep in 50- to 60-minute cycles, with a lot of active sleep—the stage their brain uses to wire itself. The day/night rhythm develops around 3–4 months, and linking sleep cycles together stabilizes slowly, sometimes up to age 3.
A child kept awake for too long produces stress hormones that make falling asleep much harder. A glazed stare, rubbing eyes, sudden hyperactivity: signs of tiredness always precede tears. Putting them down in the right window changes everything.
What builds healthy sleep isn't a secret technique, it's repetition: the same timing, the same cues, the same bedtime routine. Sleep "regressions"—at 4 months, 8–10 months, 18 months, 2 years—go hand in hand with major developmental leaps. They pass. Consistency stays.
Establish a consistent 20- to 30-minute bedtime routine: the same steps, in the same order, every night.
Create a cool, dark, and quiet environment. Consistency matters more than perfection.
At night, respond with calm consistency: a reassuring presence, minimal stimulation.
Observe before intervening: many brief awakenings resolve on their own within a few minutes.
Adjust naptime before changing bedtime: a well-paced day sets the stage for a restful night.
During sleep, the brain consolidates the day's learning, processes emotions, and releases growth hormone. Consistent sleep directly supports a child's attention span, mood, and memory—as well as their parents' patience.
